There are a lot of obvious benefits to study abroad, but is it really that important? Of course, the answer will vary depending on whom you ask. Before you start researching study abroad programs it’s vital to have a clear idea of why you want to study abroad and what you want to get out of the experience, and how studying abroad will impact your future.

My personal opinion is that study abroad is a necessity!

Study abroad opens students’ minds, exposing them to different people and cultures and leading them on the path to understanding, away from the fear that is so prevalent in today’s society. Students who travel overseas learn to embrace diversity, rather than fear it.

I  also notice the significance of international education in making students more competitive in the job market once they graduate. In an increasingly global workplace, employers want employees “who are flexible, multilingual, and comfortable in multicultural settings,” – the very skills developed during study abroad.

Some students leave with fond memories of a fun time  from the country, but no language skills, no real understanding of another culture, and no strong ties or relationships with the country and its people – the very aspects of study abroad that make it so beneficial and an important investment of time, money, and energy!

We all should research for  programmes extensively. compare options that best suited your personal and academic goals.

We should get  more involved in the host community.Try to seek out volunteer or internship opportunities — or even extracurricular sports or interest . This is an important part of becoming immersed in the culture and feeling like your host  country is really like a home.

Pushed yourself  to improve  your language skills. It’s so easy to fall back on English, especially if you’re living with other study-abroaders. Try hard to live completely in another language and to make the most of your language learning while abroad. Furthermore, continue to practice your language skill when I returned home.

Stay longer: one month is good  One semester is great, but what a difference one year could make. A semester flies by, but I think you could really call a place home, and really see a change in yourself, after you’ve lived abroad one year.

Go  without expectations. It’s hard not to have high expectations of your study abroad experience. Some days are just routine days, and that shouldn’t be seen as disappointing. It’s really pretty cool, if you think about  lower your expectations about things being out-of-this-world awesome every day, and lose your expectations altogether about things being just like at home.

Think about the future. make better use of your time and opportunities abroad and been able to use your study abroad experiences even more to further your career later.To study abroad experience is only as good as your experience is.

Take classes seriously. Study abroad offers the chance to take some fascinating classes you might not be able to anywhere else in the world. At the very least, you’ll gain a different perspective on a subject.

Go for  a homestay. You get a real look into the culture, improve your language skills, and will get a totally different (probably more enriching) experience.

Packed less. I know it’s cliche, but especially when You decide  to go traveling abroad You will reegret packing so much. It’s easier (and sometimes cheaper)

Go without Internet, or at least limited my ,Instead of taking yourself out of your new world, your time would  be better spent out exploring your host city and meeting new people. Be mindful of your internet use while abroad.

Kept a blog. take the time to keep up a blog and write some thoughtful pieces on your experience. Even though You keep a journal, it is harder to go back and look at, and it is not as thoughtful and edited as a blog probably would have been. This is also great to show for yourself later, and you never know what other doors it might open, or what new passions it might help you.

We should make  more local friends,  Making the effort required to meet locals:

Be more outgoing. There’s definitely something about being abroad that brings out a more outgoing side to even the shyest Why dont you  try to learn a little more about the cashier at my usual supermarket or the baker down the street? I’m sure they had fascinating stories and useful advice to share.

Always live in the moment. It’s a simple as that. Don’t ever forget where you are and how amazing this opportunity is. Constantly take in your surroundings and notice how you feel. Make a mental note of how your favorite bakery smells, how each local dish tastes, how the breeze feels sitting on your favorite park bench. Imprint it all in your mind, forget about everything else, and enjoy the moment!

Tried eating everything. even take cooking lessons –  pushed yourself  to try everything  you could get your hands on, and maybe even kept a food journal so You would remember all those specials.

Every study abroad experience is different and unique but there are plenty of ways to make your experience right for you. Studying abroad can be so exciting that you sometimes get overwhelmed and lose sight of what’s important, like learning about a new culture and making connections with locals.

Learn How to Communicate Across Cultures

In today’s increasingly global society, it’s important to possess the skills to communicate across cultures – and this means understanding more than just a different language. Studying abroad helps you become familiar with the customs and traditions of the country in which you are studying, in addition to the language. By interacting with locals, you can develop an appreciation for the culture and its differences from your own.

Become More Independent

Studying abroad removes you from the normal support network that you are accustomed to back home. While on the one hand, being away from friends and family can seem  tough   it is also a chance for you to practice  your own skills and gain some independence.

Whether it’s washing your laundry or buying groceries, you will learn to take responsibility for your actions. When you return home, your increased independence will be very useful – it can help you in your job search, at home, or in your day-to-day routines.

Manage Your Own Finances

One major aspect of being an independent adult is having the ability to manage your own finances. Regardless of whether your study abroad program is financed by  parents or a , grant, or another source of income, chances are that it will be your responsibility to pay the bills.

Furthermore, living in a new country also forces you to learn to understand a new form of currency, and familiarize yourself with the various living expenses. Understanding how to manage your expenses will especially be beneficial when you no longer rely on the support of your family.

Increase Your Employment Prospects

Employers value prospective candidates with international experience, foreign language skills, and the ability to communicate across cultures. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in international relations, diplomacy, or government, these skills will be especially useful.

Form New and Rewarding Relationships

Without your regular support group of friends and family, you will be confronted with new situations on a daily basis. However, studying abroad offers you the chance to meet new people and form friendships that may last a lifetime.

Whether you’re living with a host family or in a student residence, make an effort to form relationships with those around you. Not only will you have someone around to console you when you are feeling homesick, but you will also get to know people that you can have fun with. Recreation is an important part of the studying abroad experience, and you will likely enjoy sharing your experiences much more than spending your time alone.

Network for Your Future

In addition to making friends, you can also form professional contacts while abroad.Sometimes course  loads tend to be comparatively lighter while studying abroad, so this can be an ideal occasion to intern, work part-time,  or volunteer while you’re studying.When you’re finished working abroad, be sure to ask for a recommendation letter to testify that you worked abroad

Son muchos los beneficios de estudiar  en un pais de habla inglesa,pero ¿es tan importante estudiar en otro país?. La respuesta variará dependiendo de a quién preguntemos. Antes de que empieces a buscar programas para estudiar en el extranjero, es vital tener una idea de por qué quieres estudiar y qué quieres conseguir con esa experiencia y conocer lo que puede significar  para tu futuro lo que vas hacer.

Mi opinión personal es que estudiar en el extranjero es una necesidad. Estudiar en el extranjero abre la mente de los alumnos, les relaciona con diferentes personas y culturas y conduciéndoles al camino del entendimiento, alejados del miedo que prevalece en la sociedad de hoy en día.

También apunto la importancia que tiene la educación internacional en hacer a los alumnos más competentes en el mercado laboral una vez graduados. En un mundo laboral que crece globalmente, las empresas quieren a trabajadores “que sean flexibles, plurilingües y que estén cómodos en un entorno multicultural.”- las destrezas que se desarrollan cuando se estudia en el extranjero.

Algunas estudiantes dejan el país con grandes recuerdos de momentos maravillosos, pero sin las destrezas del idioma, sin entender la otra cultura y sin lazos de unión o de amistad con el país y su gente. Estos son sin duda los tres aspectos que hacen que estudiar en el extranjero sea beneficioso y una inversión importante de tiempo, dinero y energía.

Todos deberíamos buscar programas de forma amplia, comparando las opciones que mejor se adapten a nuestros objetivos académicos. Deberíamos involucrarnos más en la comunidad anfitriona, intentando buscar oportunidades como voluntariado o prácticas o incluso actividades deportivas extra-escolares o de tu interés. Esto es una parte del estar sumergido en la cultura y de sentir que tu país anfitrión es como si fuera tu hogar.

Obligate a mejorar las destrezas del idioma. Es tán fácil dejar a un lado el inglés, especialmente si estas viviendo con otros estudiantes. Intenta vivir sumergido en el otro idioma y aprovechar al máximo el aprendizaje del idiomas mientras estás fuera. Además, continúa practicando el idioma cuando estés de vuelta en casa.

Quédate mas tiempo: un mes está bien, un semestre está genial, pero un año hace la diferencia. Un semestre pasa volando, pero piensa que solo podras considerarte como en casa y ver el cambio en ti mismo despues de  haber vivido un año fuera.

Ve sin expectativas. Es duro no tener expectativas relacionadas con tu experiencia estudiando en el extranjero. Algunos días son simplemente días de rutina, y eso no debería ser decepcionante. Es mejor si piensas en reducir tus expectativas, pensar en las cosas increíbles que pasan todos los días y perder las expectativas sobre cosas como si estuvieras en casa.

Piensa en el futuro. Aprovecha tu tiempo y las oportunidades en el extranjero y se capaz de usar tus estudios en el extranjero para tu carrera profesional. La experiencia de estudiar fuera sera tan positivo como lo sea tu experiencia.

Tómate las clases en serio. Estudiar en el extranjero ofrece la oportunidad de asistir a clases increíbles que no puedas encontrar en ningún otro lugar.

Alojate en una familia local . Así observas la cultura, mejoras tus destrezas en el idioma y consigues una experiencia diferente (probablemente más enriquecedora).

Lleva menos cosas. Se que es un tópico, especialmente cuando decides viajar al extranjero. Te arrepentirás haber llevado tanto equipaje .Es mas fácil (y alguna vez más barato).

Vete sin Internet, o al menos limitado. En lugar de permanecer apartado de tu mundo nuevo, tu tiempo será mejor si lo pasas explorando tu ciudad anfitriona y su nueva gente. Se consciente de tu uso de Internet mientras estás en el extranjero.

Ten un blog. Encuentra tiempo para mantener un blog y escribir algunos posts sobre tu experiencia.Aunque tengas un diario, es más difícil volver atrás y mirar, y no es tan meditado y editado como probablemente lo sea un blog. Esto es también fantástico para verlo por tì mismo más tarde y nunca sabes que otras  puertas te puede abrir o que nuevas aficiones puede ofrecerte.

Deberíamos hacer mas amigos. Hacer el esfuerzo necesario para conocer a la gente.

Sé más extrovertido. Definitivamente hay algo sobre estar en el extranjero que saca a relucir tu lado más extrovertido incluso si eres tímido. ¿Por qué no intentas aprender un poco más de la cajera o del cajero de tu supermercado o del panadero o de la pandera de tu calle?. Estoy seguro que tienen historias fascinantes y consejos útiles que compartir.

Vive siempre el momento. Es más simple que eso. No olvides dónde estás y qué maravillosa es esta oportunidad. Pasea por los alrededores y observa como te sientes. Haz una nota mental  de como huele tu panadería favorita, como saben cada uno de los platos típicos, como sientes la brisa cuando te sientas en tu banco favorito en el parque. Imprime todo esto en tu mente, olvídate de todo lo demás, y disfruta del momento.

Intenta asimilar todo, incluso clases de cocina- obligate a intentar todo aquello que esté en tus manos, incluso mantén un diario culinario para recordar todos esos momentos especiales.

Cada una de las experiencias de estudiar en el extranjero es distinta y única pero hay muchas maneras de hacer que tu experiencia sea buena para ti. Estudiar en el extranjero puede ser tan apasionante que te puedes sentir agobiado y perder de vista aquello que es importante como aprender una cultura nueva y hacer conexiones entre las personas.

Aprende a comunicarte a través de las culturas.

En la sociedad global actual, es importante poseerlas destrezas para comunicarse a través de las  culturas- y esto significa algo más que aprender un idioma diferente. Estudiar en el extranjero ayuda a ser más familiar con las tradiciones del país en donde estás estudiando además del idioma. Interaccionando con la gente, puedes apreciar mejor la cultura y todo lo que la rodea.

Se más independiente

Estudiar fuera te aparta de los habitos cotidianos hasta tu vuelta a casa. Mientras que por otro lado, estar lejos de tus amigos y familiares puede parecer duro, pero también es una oportunidad para practicar tus propias destrezas y ganar cierta independencia. Si estas haciendo la colada o comprando verduras, prenderás a tener responsabilidades con la práctica. Cuando vuelvas a casa, tu grado de independencia será muy útil, ya que te puede ayudar en la búsqueda de tu trabajo, en casa, o en el día a día.

Lleva tus propias cuentas

Una característica de ser independiente es tener la habilidad de llevar tus propias cuentas. Independientemente de que tus estudios en el extranjero son pagados por tus padres o por una beca o cualquier otro tipo de ingreso, las oportunidades son que serás responsable de pagar las facturas.

Ademas, vivir en un nuevo país también te obliga a entender la manera de usar la moneda y familiarizarte con tus gastos. Entender cómo gestionar tus gastos será beneficioso para cuando no dependas de tu familia.

Aumenta tus expectativas de empleo

Los empresarios valoran a los candidatos potenciales con experiencia en el extranjero, con destrezas en el idioma extranjero y con la capacidad de comunicarse a través de otras  culturas.  Si estas interesado en dedicarte al mundo laboral de las relaciones internacionales, al mundo diplomático, o en  el gobierno, estas destrezas te serán muy útiles.

Forma nuevas amistadas/relaciones

Sin el apoyo de tu grupo de amigos o familiares, te enfrentarás a nuevas situaciones diariamente. A pesar de esto, estudiar en el extranjero te ofrece la oportunidad de conocer a nuevas personas y formar amistades que pueden durar toda la vida.

Si estás viviendo con una familia anfitriona o estudiando en una residencia, haz un esfuerzo para tener amistad con aquellos que te rodean. No solo tendrás a alguien alrededor que te ayudará cuando sientas nostalgia, sino que también conocerás a gente con la que podrás pasar buenas ratos.

La recreación es una parte importante de la experiencia de estudiar en el extranjero, y te divertirás compartiendo tu experiencias mucho más que si pasas el tiempo solo.

Redes para tu futuro

Ademas de hacer amigos, también puedes tener  contacto profesionales mientras estas en  el  extranjero.  Alguna veces los cursos tienden a ser más fáciles mientras estudias en el extranjero, así que esto puede ser la ocasión ideal para hacer practicas, trabajar a media jornada o hacer servicios de voluntariado mientras estás estudiando. Cuando acabes de trabajar en el extranjero,  asegúrate de pedir una carta de recomendación para atestar que has trabajado en el extranjero.

Como nos sugiere Collin Powell en el párrafo anterior, obtener una educación internacional – en otras palabras estudiar en el extranjero – es una de las mejores maneras para que los estudiantes adquieran la competencia global.

Álvaro y Beatriz son dos alumnos que están cursando un año escolar en el extranjero (en este caso en Irlanda) y nos hablan de su experiencia.

Ejemplo: Crecimiento personal

“Mi tiempo en Irlanda está siendo muy bueno. Al principio era un poco difícil el idiomas y las clases en inglés, pero es un mes me acostumbré. Los profesores, compañer@s de clase, amig@s y familia hacen todo más fácil. En el instituto las asignaturas son interesantes y prácticas, pero siempre hay algo que no te gusta, tienes asignaturas que nunca has dado o al menos ese es mi caso (ejemplos: cocina, negocios, 3º mundo, jardinería, química…) y otras con otro procesos para enseñar como matemáticas. Me encantan los experimentos que hacemos, realizamos diferentes tipos de arte con cerámica, he aprendido a cocinas, nos enseñan economía… Todo es nuevo, y la experiencia es realmente buena, ya que conoces otras formas de entender los estudios y la vida misma.
