THE IMPORTANCE OF SHOWING WHAT THEY KNOW!

In an educational system where many things need changing and we need to move towards a way of teaching based on concepts and approaches adapted to the skills that society demands in the XXI century, I personally would like to remark that one of the most important changes must be produced in the way students are assessed. In my opinion, we must stop making robots for trivial quizzes and start creating human beings who are able to fulfill their potential, who demonstrate  what they can do with what they know. People who understand the usefulness of their  knowledge and who feel curiosity not only about how to use their knowledge but also in personalizing it. In other words, the student will be able to create since he will be engaged in his learning process due to the fact that he has been and will be part of it. Having said that, I will focus on my specific learning area, which is language learning. An area which is experiencing a boom but which is being unwisely exploited. Let me explain myself:

From an early age, we have been told about the need to learn English but our curiosity has not been aroused . Every time we mention necessity, especially if it is  sudden and artificial it provokes anxiety. Suddenly, we are expected to climb Mount Everest or otherwise we won´t be called mountaineer. But how? How long will it take? What for? Then what do I do? Just get up there or you won´t be a mountaineer!

Nobody has planned or aroused  the curiosity in us to do this –  in our case learning a language and what it entails. As in a military camp , you have to do it without asking questions.

Under these circumstances, opportunism associated with bad education or teaching and a double – sided despair has arisen. On the one hand, the opportunist and sudden so called instructors, academies, town halls, organizations, and individuals looking for their own “El Dorado” in this period of economic crisis. On the other hand, the remote controlled students, unemployed people and teachers with the need for a foreign language qualification, who are sold miraculous methods to get to The Promised Land of which they know little or nothing but should ask themselves:

1^st  does it exist?, 2^nd where is it? And 3^rd how do I work with it?…To sum up, we are faced with what an important Spanish newspaper referred to as the  “Linguistic Bubble” . This is something serious that needs to be resolved but how?  To be brief, I will give you three questions and three popular sayings for you to reflect on  and to exercise critical thinking that we so frequently lack but which is one of the most important keys to solving almost any problem:

-Where are we now?

-What comes after this?

-Where do I want to go?

Popular sayings:

-Don´t count your chickens   before they´re hatched.

– Travel light.

– More haste, less speed.

Well, having made this reflection, which I hope may be useful and effective, I want to congratulate those students who are currently enjoying themselves because they are showing  what they can do with their acquired knowledge  although I fear there may not be many of them  because the current system has instilled in them  necessity and competitiveness as a goal which is producing more stress than joy.

What I am completely sure about  is that my Liffey students, who are doing the official Trinity College London Exams will be enjoying themselves and besides, the statistics (results) -so important at an academic level- will also be very good. Therefore, one thing doesn´t rule out another.

¡Épocas de Exámenes!

¡LA IMPORTANCIA DE DEMOSTRAR LO QUE SABEN!

En un sistema educativo en el que hay que cambiar muchas cosas y evolucionar hacia una enseñanza basada en conceptos y enfoques adaptados a las habilidades que demanda la sociedad del siglo XXI, personalmente me gustaría destacar que uno de los cambios más importantes debe producirse en la forma de evaluar a los alumnos, en mi opinión debemos dejar de fabricar robots para concursos de trivial y crear “seres humanos” que saquen lo mejor de sí mismos, que demuestren lo que pueden hacer con lo que saben, gente que conoce la utilidad de los conocimientos adquiridos y que siente curiosidad no solo por cómo utilizarlos sino que incluso le dará su enfoque personal a los mismos, es decir, creará ya que estará enganchado a su aprendizaje porque ha sido y será parte del mismo. Dicho lo anterior, entraré en mi área específica dentro de la enseñanza  que es la de idiomas, atravesando curiosamente un momento dulce, pero desafortunadamente mal aprovechado, me explico:

Hemos o nos han despertado la necesidad de aprender inglés pero no la curiosidad, siempre que hablamos de necesidad sobre todo si es repentina y superficial irá ligada a la ansiedad. De repente nos plantean algo así como: ¡o subes a la cima del Everest o no serás montañero!

Pero, ¿cómo?, ¿en cuánto tiempo?, ¿para qué?, ¿y luego qué hago? Tu sube, sino no serás montañero!

Nadie ha planificado ni nos ha creado la curiosidad de hacer esto, en nuestro caso aprender un idioma y lo que conlleva ahora nos dicen al más puro estilo de campamento militar de tropas especiales hay que hacerlo y no hagas preguntas.

Al amparo de estas circunstancias, ha surgido un oportunismo asociado a la mala educación o enseñanza, por una doble desesperación; por un lado los supuestos repentinos y oportunistas enseñantes, academias, ayuntamientos, organizaciones, particulares en busca de su particular “Dorado” en tiempos de crisis y por otro, los teledirigidos estudiantes, desempleados y profesores a los que se les exige un título por un lado y por otro, se les venden acciones de la tierra prometida de la cual desconocen: primero si existe, segundo dónde está, tercero cómo trabajarla,… En definitiva, estamos ante lo que definía el otro día un importante periódico nacional, “La burbuja lingüística” algo serio y que debemos solucionar. ¿Cómo?. De una manera muy breve, os dejo 3 preguntas y 3 dichos populares para reflexionar y hacer ejercicio de pensamiento crítico que es algo de lo que escaseamos y una de las claves para solucionar casi todos los problemas:

• ¿Donde estamos ahora?
• ¿Qué viene después?
• ¿A dónde quiero llegar?

Expresiones o dichos populares:

•  No me vendas la burra antes de comprarla
•  Para este viaje no necesitaba estas alforjas
•  Go slow to go fast

Bueno, hecha esta reflexión la cual espero sea útil y efectiva, quiero felicitar a todos los alumnos que en este momento están disfrutando porque se encuentran demostrando lo que pueden hacer con los conocimientos adquiridos ¿serán muchos? Me temo que no porque el sistema les ha inculcado la necesidad y la competitividad como bandera lo cual estará produciendo más stress que disfrute.

De lo que sí estoy seguro es que mis alumnos de LiffeyGroup que están haciendo su examen oficial de Trinity College London estarán disfrutando y que además las estadísticas (resultados) tan importante a nivel de expediente académico serán también muy buenas, luego se pueden conseguir las dos cosas.
